Henry St. Vincent Ames was born on the 19th August 1833. He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford University, matriculated 25th February 1853, aged 19, BA 1857, MA 1860. His father, George Ames was a West India Merchant. He lived at Cote House, Westbury-on-Trym. He spent part of his life in the 1860s photographing in Canada. The entrance to Cote House was across the road from the ground at Durdham Down which he owned and the club used from 1882-1885.
