Born 13th September 1877 Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wilts. A direct descendant of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, 2nd cousin of Queen Elizabeth 1st, who was executed at the Tower of London in 1572 for treason. Winchester College. 4th Glos. Succeeded his father as Earl of Suffolk in March 1898. Married wealthy heiress Margaret Hyde Leiter in 1904. She was daughter of a Chicago business man, whose department store was burnt down in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Died 21st April 1917 Mesopotamia. Killed by shrapnel through the heart while commanding 1st Wilts. Commemorated on Basra War Cemetery. His son, Charles Henry George Howard, was killed performing bomb disposal in WW2
