The Bristol Mercury said

FOOTBALL.-Gloucestershire v Somersetshire.- This match, the first county match played by Gloucestershire came off on Thursday at Weston-super-Mare, in the presence of numerous spectators. The game was evenly contested from first to last, and was very fast, considering that the ground was covered by snow some two inches deep. Willmot won the toss and kicked off, the ball being well returned was kept unpleasantly close to the Somersetshire goal, until they were obliged to touch down. After this the Somerset team compelled Gloucester to touch down, and no other advantage was gained by either side until after half time, when the Somerset backs passed the ball, and the close quarters in which it was kept made the game look dangerous for Gloucester. It was, however, touched down by Patterson, fortunately too near the touchline to enable Wilmott to place a goal. The next point of importance was a touch gained by Gloucestershire, but all their efforts to gain a try were unavailing. An enjoyable game finally resulted in an even draw, both sides having scored one try and two touches. The play of both teams throughout was very good, the home team perhaps having the advantage forward and the visitors behind the scrimmage. Patterson, Foord, Lysaght, and Baker forward and Fuller behind played best for Somerset; and for Gloucestershire Hirst, Lamb, Cartwright, Winterbotham, and Evans showed to the most advantage. The Gloucestershire team were hospitably entertained at dinner by the Somerset men after the match. The sides were :- Gloucester- J.D.Miller (Clifton) (Captain), and H.J.Berry (Gloucester), backs; H.L.Evans (Clifton), H.M.Hamilton (Stroud), and R.Gribble (Clifton), three-quarter backs; J.F.Brown (Gloucester), and G.G.Pruen (Cheltenham), half backs; J.E.Bush (Clifton), G.M.Cartwright (Stroud), J.H.Dunn (Clifton), J.C.Gilmore (Clifton), C.Hirst (Rockleaze), S.J.Lamb (Cheltenham), P.R.Pakenham (Cheltenham), forwards.
