Cambridge XV of 1892 with Edwin Field.

Edwin Fields debut was the first Wales-England encounter to take place at Cardiff. There was some doubt as to whether the game would take place as, at the time, the south of Britain was engulfed by a severe frost. Cardiff groundsmen had used braziers and 18 tons of coal to soften the pitch throughout the night. The plan half succeeded because the pitch was like a chequer board with alternating muddy squares where the braziers had been with icy patches where they hadn't. The match went ahead watched by a crowd of 20,000, a record for a Welsh International up to that time. The majority of the crowd left the match thinking that the score had been a 14-14 draw but 2 days before the IRB had met and decreed that all goals should be worth 3 points and tries two. Unfortunately there had been little publicity about the change. Wales went on to win the Triple Crown for the first time.

Above the Cambridge University Cricket team of 1894 with ex Clifton RFC player Edwin Field. This was a weak Cambridge University side who had lost 5 first team bowlers. The legendary C.B.Fry was captain of the Oxford XI and the rumour was that he could only play on the leg side. The new Cambridge bowlers persistently bowled 2 feet wide of the off stump and between them delivered 11 wides. Fry was in for half an hour before scoring his first run. He refused almost every ball until the ninth wicket of Oxford 1st innings fell. Then he needed 17 for his 100. He got the required runs in 2 overs and was not out. Field did not do well with the bat scoring 0 and 16. Oxford won by 8 wickets.
